When does the gate come into the channel strip?

I was just wondering. When do you gate? If recording live drums for example you are probably going to need one.
It seems logical to me that you would put the gate in right way so that when you eq ,saturate and compress, you are only doing those things to the sounds that you need rather than a bleeding snare thru the kick drum mic.
Any thoughts/opinions would be a huge help!
Thanks,
John

if im using a channel strip i definetely gate in the beginning if im using a single plugin i gate before i put the compressor in and if its sidchained i do it at the end like a snare on a gated reverb

i think you more than likely would gate mostly before though because it effects the EQ,compression etc and shapes the sound rightaway

Thank you! I think I might be catching on!
